Forward Battery Compartment

Description

Underneath the wardroom and officer staterooms is the actual location of the boat's forward batteries.

These submarines ran on diesel engines while on the surface. To travel underwater, electric motors were required since diesels need air. While on the surface, the diesels charged the bateries.

This is where 126 of the ships monster-sized batteries were located.

They have been removed from the boat due to the hazardous nature of the cells.

I am sticking my camera down the hatch seen here [link] and looking aft. Obviously, some junk has found it's way down.

The general public can not normally get in this section.

The similar compartment in the after part of the boat is currently being used for storage.

The discarded soda can is rather incongruous. Another great and insightful shot, Mike!
