After Torpedo Room 2

Description

The sink on the forward bulkhead, and suspended mattresses attests to another purpose of torpedo rooms.

They were also sleeping areas for the crew. In the Aft Torpedo Room, twelve bunks could be set up in the skids where four of the fish were stored.

The drawback was that only four bunks were usable until the fish were expended. This worked out that three crewman used each bunk.

In May of 1944, USS Barb was patrolling the Okhotsk sea. The very first attack cleared out several bunks in the Forward Torpedo Room.

Capt Eugene Fluckey had received a request from Chief Torpedoman Rufus Roark earlier that day.The chief asked the captain to try and use some stern torpedoes so that his men could each have a bunk.

Fluckey would oblige that same day and put his second enemy ship on the bottom.

The torpedoman slept much better that night.

I love it! I served for 25 years on 5 differant Boats, one of them (The USS Grayback SS 574) had stern tubes.
